Course Description

10 sessions of 3 hours each = 30 hours contact over 2 weeks

Target audience

Graduate students and researchers with and understanding of the basic concepts of probability and statistical inference

Detailed Programme
  • Review of basic concepts: statistical distributions, sample distributions, types of variables, principles of significance testing

  • Relationships among variables: association and dependence. Measuring association and dependence. Correlation coefficients (for 2 or more variables) and coefficient of determination. Regression (simple). Linear and nonlinear regression

  • Models for continuous responses and discrete explanatory variables (1 OF 2): ANOVA models (single factor, random blocks, repeated measures, nested designs)

  • Models for continues responses and discrete explanatory variables (2 OF 2): ANOVA models (factorial designs).

  • Models for continuous responses and explanatory variables: Multiple regression

  • Models for continuous responses and continuous and discrete explanatory variables: ANCOVA and mixed models

  • Models for proportions: logistic model, survival curves

  • Models for discrete responses and explanatory variables: categorical models. Models analysis of frequencies: log-linear models.

  • The generalized linear model. Assumptions and limitations of linear models. Variable transformation. Introduction to the generalized additive model

  • Guide lines for data analysis, experimental design and model choice
